Shakespeare in Performance (SIP) provides comprehensive training in script analysis, movement on a thrust stage, improvisational comedy, and ensemble work. Students come together to form a dynamic troupe, including actors, singers, musicians, and dancers. We firmly believe in the value of theater arts education for today's students.
Since 2012, Professor Curtright has been directing plays that engage our students in meaningful ways. Our current and former students have the opportunity to assist or intern at Professor Curtright's Shakespeare summer camp, designed specifically for teenagers. Through on-stage experiences, students learn to embrace risks, value challenges, and enhance their problem-solving and creative thinking abilities. Off-stage, the skills they acquire prepare them for successful careers, making them exceptional job candidates known for respecting deadlines, demonstrating leadership, and maintaining a strong work ethic. Moreover, our program embodies the essence of the actor’s art: living truthfully under imaginary circumstances. This approach helps young people discover and understand themselves better.
Saint Pope John Paul II aptly describes the transformative power of art: "In producing a work, artists express themselves to the point where the work becomes a unique disclosure of their own being, of what they are, and of how they are what they are." In essence, the Shakespeare in Performance educational experience is akin to 'rehearsals for real life,' offering students unparalleled opportunities for personal and artistic growth.
