Welcome to another edition of the Ave Maria University Weekly Recap, where we look back on the highlights of the past week's campus events, including Theology on Tap, the beach volleyball game, and Ave’s Got Talent.
Immaculée Ilibagiza—an amazing speaker who survived the Rwandan Genocide by hiding in a 3x4 ft. bathroom for 91 days—came to AMU for Theology on Tap. Her story of faith and peace amidst the worst of times was deeply moving. She stayed after the talk to meet students and sign copies of her book. We are so grateful we had the opportunity to get to know her faithful heart!
Dr. Dauphinais hosted a colloquium that explored the biblical theology of marriage. After a social with drinks and refreshments, Dr. Dauphinais began his lecture. His colloquium is another example of the intellectual enrichment AMU students are privileged to receive outside the classroom.
AMU’s Beach Volleyball team started Sun Conference play on Saturday afternoon, beginning with a win over Warner University, 4-1. The day ended with a 3-2 victory over the fifth-ranked team in the nation, Webber International University. This was their first-ever win over Webber in four years of varsity play. The Gyrenes now have a record of 2-2 and will play against an NCAA Divison II opponent this week. Go Gyrenes!
Students had the opportunity to showcase their skills at AMU through the annual Ave's Got Talent event. Those who stepped into the spotlight performed acts including singing, dancing, comedy, and much more. Jelyssa Basulto won the trophy for her singing. It was a night of great fun and many laughs showcasing the immense talent of our student body.
The AMU men's basketball team won their quarterfinal game over Southeastern University 81-71. This win advances AMU to the Sun Conference semifinals against the two seeded Florida Memorial Lions. Our Gyrenes held the lead for most of the game, finishing with 12 threes increasing their season total to 359. Jack Watkins led the team in scoring with 19 points, and he was joined in double digits by Michael Klekas, Jonathan Effertz, and Nick Filchner. This was the team's last home game, and we're so glad it ended on a win. Good luck to the Gyrenes in the final four of the Sun Conference Tournament!
