Celebrate our beautiful patroness and her fiat at Ave Maria University’s Alumni Reunion as we honor alumni from the classes of ’04, ’09, ’14, and ’19.
As many have heard, Dr. Michael Sugrue passed away in January after a long battle with cancer. Dr. Sugrue grew up in 1960s New York in an Irish Catholic family. He earned his B.A. at the University of Chicago and Ph.D. at Columbia University.
Dr. Sugrue joined Ave Maria in 2004 as the first chair of the History Department. For the next 17 years, he imbued undergraduate students with a love for the Liberal Arts, the Great Books, and the history of Western civilization.
“Dr. Sugrue once told me that life regularly presents us with opportunities to be clever or to be kind. He said he had chosen one at the expense of the other many times, but that he often regretted choosing to be clever rather than kind but never regretted being kind rather than clever,” former student and current Associate VP for Enrollment Adam Kinnick (’17) said. “I tried to remember that with my students when I taught.” Kinnick added, “Dr. Sugrue was one of the single most gifted teachers I’ve ever met. He embodied what it is to be a teacher.”
A Mass was offered for the repose of the soul of Dr. Sugrue on February 17, by Fr. Bob Garrity and attended by several current AMU professors.
Alumni are invited to leave a personal message or give a gift in honor of Dr. Sugrue.
The official opening ceremony for our Tom Golisano Field House took place on Saturday, February 10. After being introduced by President Middendorf, Tom Monaghan and Tom Golisano each gave a brief testimony of their motivation to support AMU and then cut the ribbon. The celebration was followed by a men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader.
