What if I'm not sure what major I want to take?
That's completely normal! Many students enter college undecided. AMU offers academic advising to help you explore your interests and strengths. You can also take general education courses during your first year while you discover what excites you academically.
I've heard AMU is mainly for theology majors or athletes. True?
Not at all! While we have excellent theology and athletic programs, AMU offers over 30 undergraduate majors across business, sciences, humanities, nursing, and more. Our students pursue diverse career paths in medicine, law, education, business, and many other fields.
How will I be able to get an internship?
AMU's Career Services office actively helps students find internships in their fields of interest. We have partnerships with organizations across Florida and nationwide. Many of our students complete internships during their junior or senior years, gaining valuable real-world experience.
Is AMU serious about academics?
Absolutely. AMU maintains rigorous academic standards with small class sizes (average 18:1 student-faculty ratio) that allow for personalized attention. Our faculty are dedicated scholars who are committed to challenging students intellectually while supporting their growth.
Is AMU only for homeschoolers?
No! Our student body includes graduates from public schools, private schools, Catholic schools, and homeschool programs. We welcome students from all educational backgrounds who are seeking an excellent Catholic liberal arts education.
Are there mentors I can learn from?
Yes! Beyond your professors, AMU offers academic advisors, spiritual directors, and peer mentoring programs. Our close-knit community means you'll build meaningful relationships with faculty and staff who genuinely care about your success.
College is expensive. How can I get the most out of my money if I go to AMU?
AMU offers generous merit-based scholarships, need-based financial aid, and various grants. Over 95% of our students receive some form of financial assistance. We also keep our tuition competitive compared to similar private universities.
What is a degree from Ave Maria going to mean for me when I graduate?
An AMU degree signals that you've received a rigorous education grounded in the Catholic intellectual tradition. Our alumni are highly sought after by employers and graduate schools. They go on to successful careers in medicine, law, business, education, ministry, and more.
Is AMU in the middle of nowhere?
AMU is located in the planned community of Ave Maria, Florida, about 30 minutes from Naples. While the campus provides a peaceful environment for study, you're close to beautiful beaches, shopping, dining, and the cultural attractions of Southwest Florida.
Do I need a car?
While having a car is convenient for off-campus activities, it's not required. The campus has everything you need, and the university organizes regular trips to Naples, beaches, and other destinations. Many students share rides for off-campus excursions.
Is there anything to do there besides attend classes?
Plenty! AMU has over 40 student clubs and organizations, NCAA Division II athletics, intramural sports, campus ministry activities, cultural events, and more. Our beautiful Florida location also offers easy access to beaches, hiking, and outdoor recreation.
Is AMU a party school?
AMU is known for its wholesome, faith-filled community rather than a party atmosphere. Students enjoy plenty of social events, dances, and activities, but in an environment that supports your academic success and spiritual growth.
Is Mass available?
Daily Mass is celebrated multiple times on campus at the beautiful Ave Maria Oratory. Confession is also available daily. The sacramental life is at the heart of our campus community.
Will I meet my spouse at Ave Maria?
Many AMU alumni have met their spouses here! Our community naturally fosters meaningful friendships and relationships. While we can't guarantee you'll find your future spouse, you'll certainly be surrounded by faith-filled peers who share your values.
What in the world is a Gyrene? Do I pronounce it Guy-Ree-Knee?
A Gyrene (pronounced JY-reen) is our mascot! It's a nickname for U.S. Marines, chosen to honor the fighting spirit and dedication of our student-athletes and the military heritage many of our students and families share.
Are there alligators on campus?
This is Florida, so yes, you might occasionally spot a gator in the retention ponds around campus! They're generally not a concern and stay in their natural habitats. It's just part of the unique Florida experience!
