Overview

Is Economics all about math?

If you ask graduate schools, the answer is yes.  The BS in Quantitative Economics prepares you for graduate school -- and for careers that look for quantitative skills.  Thus, this major has an official STEM designation because it

  • requires Calculus II and Calculus-based Intermediate Macro and Micro;
  • requires Econometrics (i.e., advanced statistics applied to economic problems); and
  • focus its electives on topics that are more quantitative, cross-listing with other departments such as Data Analytics and Mathematics and/or more advanced.

Why should you get a B.S. in Quantitative Economics?

Chapter 02

Why should you get a B.S. in Quantitative Economics?

First, because you will learn quantitative skills.

Second, in order to go to Graduate school in Economics, a student must have studied a lot of Mathematics.  Calculus II, Probability, Real Analysis, Linear Algebra are typically required by graduate schools or highly recommended.  A Ph.D. in Finance, likewise, may have Calculus II, Linear Algebra, and Probability as prerequisites.

Third, STEM majors have gained in popularity after a 2016 Department of Homeland Security decision to extend Optional Practical Training benefits to a total of 36 months (versus 12 months for non-STEM graduates).
