Overview

Discover Actuarial Science

Actuaries are risk management experts who employ their knowledge of mathematics, statistics, and finance to model and ultimately manage economic risk.  Many actuaries work for insurance companies in both pricing and reserving roles; others work in the areas of pension consulting and valuation; others still apply their actuarial knowledge in various risk management, quantitative finance, or investment capacities.

An actuarial career is consistently ranked as one of the most desirable professions for its high salaries and favorable work-life balance.

Chapter 02

Skills You will Gain

  1. Aptitude in Quantitative Analysis: Courses in Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, Economics, and Computer Science will provide students with a solid foundation for more advanced actuarial studies and help to secure employment in actuarial or other closely related fields.
  2. Actuarial Credentialing: Ave Maria University’s minor in actuarial science will introduce quantitatively-inclined students to many of the foundational courses needed to advance in the Society of Actuaries credentialing system.
  3. Learn to Manage Risk: Actuarial Science is, at bottom, the science of measuring and then ultimately managing risk.  Risk is a dynamic inherent in all human decision-making: be it moral or economic, individual or societal.  The correct regulation of risk is, therefore, closely associated with the cardinal virtues of prudence, justice, and temperance.
