The 2008 Gyrene Gala is an occasion to honor military chaplains who provide solace to our servicemen and women during times of physical and spiritual suffering. It is also an occasion to follow their example and provide very practical assistance to these very same servicemen and women in the form of scholarships at Ave Maria University. Our military chaplains serve as a bridge between generations, ministering to those who put themselves in harm's way to uphold the beliefs of their forefathers so that future generations can enjoy the blessings of faith and freedom. To support their education is a fitting tribute to this legacy as that education is also a way of bridging the wisdom of the past with the aspirations of the future.
Attendees at the 2008 Gyrene Gala will have the opportunity to commemorate posthumously two extraordinary military chaplains: Father Vincent Capodanno and Cardinal John O'Connor. Both are models of strength, courage, and Christian love. Both served in Vietnam and received medals for their military service. Yet the story of Fr. Capodanno is that of the soldier-priest who made the ultimate sacrifice on the battlefield, while Cardinal O'Connor was called to publicly champion the tenets of the faith over the course of a full lifetime.
The 2008 Gyrene Gala, which is dedicated to our military chaplains, and especially to the memory of Reverend Vincent Capodanno and Cardinal John O'Connor, will take place on Saturday, February 16. Proceeds will be directed to military scholarships for Marines at Ave Maria University.
