AMU Hurricane Ian Update HOME | Hurricane AMU Hurricane Ian Update THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2022 (6:30 p.m. update) Great news! Power and air conditioning have been completely restored to the University, town of Ave Maria, and our Dining Hall. With the restoration of internet access at Ave Maria University and in the surrounding area, classes on Friday, September 30, will be in session. Some professors who are unable to travel to campus may not have internet access. However, most classes will be held at least online, and many will be held in person with an online (Teams) option. Therefore, as previously communicated, in-person classes will resume on campus on Monday, October 3. Any student having trouble returning to campus for classes on Monday through the Ft. Myers airport (RSW) must request accommodation through Jenifer LeCompte (jenifer.lecompte@avemaria.edu) in order to receive an excused absence. Collier County Curfew Collier County has issued a county-wide curfew from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. until further notice, so you must remain on campus during those hours. The penalty for curfew violation is a second degree misdemeanor. Misdemeanors of the second degree are punishable by a jail term of up to 60 days and a fine up to $500. Volunteer Opportunity If you would like to volunteer to help those impacted by Hurricane Ian, please join us on Saturday morning, October 1. We will meet at 8:00 a.m. in the megadorm parking lot and travel in University vans to the work site locations. The Daily Grind and Dining Hall Updates The Daily Grind will resume normal hours tomorrow. The Dining Hall will be open until 10:00 p.m. tonight, September 29. The Dining Hall will resume normal service hours tomorrow, September 30. Mass Schedule All campus Masses will resume as normal. Adoration Chapel The Martha Burke Chapel will open at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow, September 30. Library Hours Library hours will resume as normal. Parking The Parking Lot T: Grass/Gravel Lot is now open! Please move your vehicles back to that lot. If you would like to learn more about AMU’s response to Hurricane Ian, please view our website for regular updates. God bless you, The Ave Maria University Staff THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2022 (8:00 a.m. update) Important Announcement from Ave Maria University: ALL CLEAR The campus of Ave Maria University has reopened to foot traffic, scooters, and bicycles. The courtesy vans have discontinued. Campus Updates The Daily Grind will begin serving free coffee for students, faculty, and staff at 8:30 a.m. Cell reception is available on campus. Please do not walk on the canal pavers on the west side of the megadorm; there is erosion and paver damage in that area. This area is marked with caution tape. Our central utility plant, which houses all of our AC equipment, remains without power. As a result, our campus is still without air conditioning at this time. Please avoid unnecessary travel. Many of the roads in surrounding areas are still flooded and surrounding towns without power. Student Union / Dining Hall Updates Our Student Union / Dining Hall building is still without power so we will be serving a modified menu. Continental breakfast is being served this morning. The Dining Hall building is open all day, but food service hours are subject to change depending on power. Mass Schedule All Masses will be available in the Our Lady of Guadalupe chapel today. Areas of town are still without power, including the Ave Maria Parish. Our chaplains are saying all three Masses today for those impacted by Hurricane Ian. Adoration Chapel The Martha Burke Chapel will be closed today for maintenance. Library Hours: Thursday, September 29: 8:00AM-Midnight Friday, September 30: 8:00AM-10:00PM Parking Reminder: Parking Lot T: Grass/Gravel Lot is still closed. We will notify when you can move your car back to that lot. Frequently Asked Questions Are the students safe? Yes. This campus was built to withstand a direct hit of a Category 4 hurricane (130-155 mile per hour sustained winds); as of 10:30 a.m., we only have only 30 mile per hour winds. Hurricane Ian is expected to make landfall north of AMU, so we will not receive the brunt of the storm. We are not in the flood plain zone or at risk of storm surges. Nearby first responders have requested that their personnel and families stay here at AMU as we are considered a shelter in place in emergency situations. How are we communicating to students and parents? AMU will continue to share messages with students, parents, faculty, and staff throughout the storm. Urgent alerts will go out through the Everbridge app via text and email. All the information will appear on our official AMU social media pages and be posted to our Hurricane Ian web page. You may also monitor the storm through local news agencies. In the event of loss of power or cell operations, please tune in to WGCU 90.1 FM (Fort Myers, Naples, and Port Charlotte) and 91.7 FM (Marco Island). The WGCU station is a provider of Florida Radio Network services and will continue to broadcast critical information throughout the storm and afterwards. Will students have access to food and water? Yes! Dining hall services are currently functioning as normal and have plenty of food and water for our students. Continuous shuttles are being provided to students to travel to and from the residence halls if they would prefer not to walk. What if power/cell goes out? We are not anticipating extended loss of power or loss of cell phone service. Power outage: If we do experience a power outage, we have secured diesel fuel for our generators. We have generators that turn on automatically for the Academic Building, Student Union, Library, and these residence halls: St. Maria Goretti, St. Sebastian, and St. Francis Xavier. Generators for Mother Teresa, St. John Paul II, and St. Joseph Halls will be manually activated as soon as it is safe to do so. Florida Power & Light and Lee County Electrical Co-op have linesmen staged in Collier County to begin getting power back online as soon as it’s safe for them to do so, according to the Sheriff’s Office’s social media channels. Wi-Fi/data communication: AMU core network infrastructure and data services are designed to provide continuous data access. We designed the system with multiple redundancies in place. Core network hardware is fully redundant and located in separate buildings. We have multiple internet service providers for redundant connectivity. Both providers, Lumen Communication and Comcast, have robust infrastructure with separate physical paths to campus. Cell service: Availability of cell service will depend solely on availability of cell phone towers for each service provider (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc.) in the area. Cell providers all have their own backup plans to be able to continue service. What is the class schedule this week? All classes will remain exclusively online Wednesday and Thursday. Professors have uploaded lectures, assignments, and projections that students are allowed to complete by the end of the week. Students should continue to engage in their classes online. Any changes to this plan due to weather conditions or loss of power will be communicated clearly to all students, faculty, and parents. Students who have evacuated should prepare to return to campus before classes resume exclusively in-person on Monday, October 3. Primer: How to use Microsoft Teams Wednesday, Sep 28 WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2022 (5:30 p.m. update) One of our two utility companies is providing power to all six residence halls, Canizaro Library, and the Henkels Academic building. The other utility company is temporarily down. This impacts the Bob Thomas Student Union/Dining Hall, which now is running on a generator. The Dining Hall will continue to serve meals until 10:00 p.m. Students are instructed to continue using courtesy van transportation to the Dining Hall from the residence halls. Please do not walk to the Dining Hall at this time. Out of an abundance of caution for possible erratic weather throughout the night, students will be required to stay in their residence halls from 10:00 p.m. tonight until 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. Van transportation will resume tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. Please note Collier Country sheriff’s office curfew statement. Library, Academic, and Prince buildings are closed until morning. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2022 (2:30 p.m. update) Weather Advisory from Ave Maria University: High Winds Ave Maria University is currently experiencing sustained wind speeds up to 50 mph. Students are advised to avoid nonessential travel. If on campus, refrain from using bikes, skateboards, and scooters, as these items can become projectiles under these conditions. Stay off the bridge. Van service will continue until otherwise noted. Additional information below. High Wind/Tornado Guidelines If a high wind/tornado warning is received, seek shelter immediately in an area that is in an interior hallway or room; at the lowest level in the building; and/or an area free of windows or glass. Protect your body from flying debris with furniture and/or sturdy equipment. Use your arms to protect your head and neck. Follow instructions given by university staff, emergency personnel, and the Mass Notification System messages. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2022 (noon update) Hurricane Ian remains a category 4 hurricane, approximately 60 miles offshore of Naples and moving to the northeast. Ave Maria University remains outside of the “Cone of Uncertainty”. It is likely that we will continue to experience heavy rainfall and wind throughout the day. Avoid non-essential travel. Updates will continue throughout the day. Please note: For the rest of the day today, please do not ride your bikes, scooters, or skateboards around campus. If you would like to go to the Dining Hall, please take one of the three van shuttles from the residence halls to the Dining Hall that are running continuously today. The vans will be stopping between St. Xavier Hall and St. Joseph Hall. Our Dining Hall food service is available all day until 10:00 p.m. If we receive a Tornado Warning, we will notify you and ask that you shelter in place. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2022 (morning update) Hurricane Ian upgraded to category 4 strength overnight. Ave Maria University remains outside the “Cone of Uncertainty”. It is likely that we will continue to experience heavy rainfall and wind throughout the day. Avoid non-essential travel. We will continue updates throughout the day. We humbly beseech you to keep us safe from all dangers and to calm the storms that threaten us. May we be secure in your loving protection and serve you always with grateful hearts.
