Roger Nutt, S.T.L., S.T.D.

Roger W. Nutt, S.T.L., S.T.D., is Provost of Ave Maria University. He holds graduate degrees from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas-Angelicum (Rome) and Franciscan University of Steubenville (OH). He joined the University in 2006 as a member of the theology department where he continues to serve as Associate Professor. He teaches the core curriculum course, THEO 205: Sacred Doctrine, and upper level undergraduate and graduate courses on the Sacraments and Christology. He co-directs the Aquinas Center for Theological Renewal with Dr. Michael Dauphinais and Dr. Steven Long, and is a member of the Academy of Catholic Theology.

His research focuses on Christology and Sacramental Theology, and especially the Theology of St. Thomas Aquinas. He is the author of three books: Thomas Aquinas’ ‘De Unione Verbi Incarnati’ (Peeters Publishers, 2015); General Principles of Sacramental Theology (The Catholic University of America Press, 2017); and To Die is Gain: A Theological (re-)Introduction to the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick for Clergy, Laity, Caregivers, and Everyone Else (Emmaus Academic, 2022). He has translated a number of works, including (with Dr. Joseph Trabbic), Thomas Aquinas: A Historical and Philosophical Profile (The Catholic University of America Press, 2016) by Pasquale Porro. His articles and book chapters have appeared in publications such as Nova et Vetera, Gregorianum, Louvain Studies, The Thomist, Harvard Theological Review, Angelicum, Antiphon: A Journal of Liturgical Renewal, and the Oxford Handbook of the Reception of Aquinas. He is co-editor of numerous volumes, including: Thomas Aquinas and the Crisis of Christology (Sapientia Press of Ave Maria University, 2021); Aquinas the Biblical Theologian (Emmaus Academic, 2021); Thomas Aquinas and the Greek Fathers (Sapientia Press of Ave Maria University, 2019); and Thomism and Predestination: Principles and Disputations (Sapientia Press of Ave Maria University, 2016).

In 2017, Dr. Nutt was appointed to the administration as Dean of Faculty and Vice President for Academic Affairs. In 2020 he was appointed Provost. He also served as Interim President of Ave Maria University during the 2021-2022 academic year.

Dr. Nutt and his wife, Susan, reside in the community of Ave Maria, FL, located near the University with their son, Timothy.
