Still have questions? Don’t hesitate to reach out! What is yourQUESTION ABOUT?HOUSING ASSIGNMENTSHOW ARE HOUSING ASSIGNMENTS MADE? Unless a specific roommate request is made on the online housing contract, incoming freshmen students are generally paired with another freshman roommate according to preferences specified in the housing contract, and then assigned to a residence hall. Students are paired with other students in their same class so as to provide support for the unique learning that happens at that level. Incoming transfer students are paired with other transfer students and assigned to a residence hall. They are paired with consideration to age so as to match students that are at a similar stage of personal development. WHAT IS THE POLICY FOR STUDENTS WISHING TO LIVE OFF CAMPUS? The university requires students to live on campus unless: They are 23 or older They are married They are a commuter (live with your parents within 40 miles) They receive an exemption to live off-campus (for extreme/hardship cases) We are primarily a residential campus, to try and foster community and the growth in holiness and the virtues for our students. CAN I CHANGE ROOMMATES IF I AM NOT GETTING ALONG WITH MY ASSIGNED ROOMMATE? Living in a Residence Hall brings some challenges for many students. If there are roommate conflicts, we encourage the residents to communicate with each other and their Resident Assistants and/or Residence Director to resolve the situations. However, if a resident wants to move rooms, he/she is free to do so during each semester’s Room Switch Period, a time when students can switch rooms for any reason, as long as all other people involved sign off on the move. More details on that during the semester. Outside of the Room Switch Period, room changes are not permitted. WHEN WILL I FIND OUT MY HOUSING ASSIGNMENT AND WHO MY ROOMMATE IS? The Office of Residence Life and Housing will begin emailing housing and roommate assignments by July 2, 2018 to students who have submitted their online housing contract and their medical forms by July 1, 2018. RESIDENCE HALL ROOMS & AMENITIESCan I arrive early to get settled in? You cannot move into your assigned residence until 9:00 AM on Thursday, August 23. On-campus services will not be prepared to assist you before this time. You are, however, welcome to come out early and get acquainted with the area. Many parents and students find this time useful for picking up those last minute items they did not want to pack for the trip to Ave Maria. There are a number of hotels that the university recommends. You will find their phone number, their distance from campus, and their approximate costs on the university website. Are there laundry rooms in the Residence Halls? Washing machines and dryers are located within each residence hall and are free for the residents of the building. What types of rooms are available? Male students will be housed in one of four residence halls with the following possible accommodations: Saint Francis Xavier Hall: Double/triple occupancy room (one bathroom per room). Eight person suite (two bathrooms per suite). Saint Maria Goretti Hall: Double/triple occupancy room (one bathroom per room). Eight person suite (two bathrooms per suite). Saint Sebastian Hall: Double/triple occupancy room (one bathroom per room). Eight person suite (two bathrooms per suite). Saint Joseph Hall: Double occupancy room (one bathroom shared between two rooms). Female students will be housed in either Saint John Paul II Hall or Mother Teresa Hall. Rooms in JPII Hall or Mother Teresa Hall are all quads housing four residents, each with its own bathroom facilities. What items are supplied in the room? Each room is furnished with a desk, chair, bed, wardrobe, and dresser for each person. How big can my refrigerator be in my room? No larger than 3.6 cubic feet. Can I access the internet from my Residence Hall room? Yes, the entire campus is outfitted for wireless internet. Will I have a telephone in my room? MOVE IN DAYWhat should I bring to school from home? Please don’t bring everything you own from home! Please visit the Orientation page. Can I bring my pets? No pets, except fish, are allowed in any residence hall. Can I send my belongings to the University before I arrive? The University accepts packages one week before your arrival and will not accept any prior to that. The boxes will be placed in the mail room or common room and you will have to collect your boxes and carry them to your room from that location. Resident Assistants, informally known as “RA’s”, help freshman adjust to university life. These upper-class students have been selected and trained to be part of the Student Life staff. Moreover, the Orientation Team will help new residents with the move-in process. Can I arrive early to get settled in? What does the Residence Hall staff do? Residence Director (RD) Residence Directors are professional, full-time, live-in staff who are responsible for managing the Residence Hall facilities, supervising the Hall Staff, facilitating the good order of the residential environment and fostering personal and community development. Resident Assistants (RA) Resident Assistants are students who have been specially selected and trained to work with the Residence Directors in carrying out their duties. They provide peer leadership, support and regular supervision of the residents in their building. VISITORS AND SCHOOL BREAKSWhat is the University Visitor Policy? The University policy states that visitors over the age of 13 are allowed to spend the night. If you wish to have a visitor spend the night you must get approval from your roommates and the Residence Director by filling out the appropriate forms at least 24 hours in advance. The visitor may stay up to 3 days. Longer stays require explicit permission from the Director of Residence Life. When the University is officially closed (Thanksgiving and Christmas) and during Final Exams there are no visitors allowed to stay in the halls. Are residence halls closed over Fall, thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring Breaks? Residence Halls are open for Fall Break, Thanksgiving Break, and Spring Break with no additional fees. Residence Halls are closed during Christmas Break and all residents must vacate the premises during this break. TRANSPORTATION AND GETTING AROUNDHow far is Ave Maria University from the beach? Ave Maria University is located approximately 28 miles from the beach. Are freshmen allowed to have cars on campus? Any student is permitted to have a car on campus. Students must register for a parking permit available through campus security. May I bring my bicycle to school with me? Yes. Bikes are allowed in rooms but they cannot be kept in the residence hall stairwells for fire and safety reasons. We do have outdoor racks, but make sure you bring a lock for your bicycle. Rollerblading and skateboarding are permitted on campus. Is there public transportation available for those without cars? No. While the local public transportation company, Collier Area Transit (C.A.T.), services locations in Naples, there are currently no stops located in close proximity to Ave Maria University’s location in eastern Collier County.
