The Thomas S. Monaghan Founder’s Scholarship Program Holds Its 1st Event

On Friday, September 2, 2022, Ave Maria University’s Thomas S. Monaghan Founder’s Scholarship Program (FSP) celebrated its first campus event: Saints Around the World.

The event took place in the 6 dormitories on campus, each dorm lobby representing its patron or patroness. Students had the opportunity to enjoy food and festivities from Italy, India, Poland, France, Spain, and Palestine, while playing volleyball, corn hole, and other yard games. Even with the unpredictable wet season of southwest Florida, spirits remained high as students took advantage of the rainy weather.

“Despite the weather, everyone had a great time and rallied to make it a super fun event! We’re so grateful for our Residence Life team and caterers for their hard work – they truly made it an amazing experience for our students.”  —Monica Weipert, Program Ambassador

FSP is a new initiative for Ave Maria and was offered specifically to incoming Freshmen this year. The program combines fostering community and strengthening a relationship with Christ, as students attend weekly small groups with other scholarship recipients. FSP events happen weekly and are always preluded with a theological discussion featuring University faculty or staff.

“FSP is a program that is meant to form good, strong Catholics who can become leaders in the world and help spread the Word of God. For all 4 years of our college experience, we will be reading the Bible, The Shadow of His Wings, and other such books, and will also be participating in outreach programs and sponsoring events at the school… The resources that I have been given thus far have strengthened my faith and have shown me the importance of courage as a Catholic.”  —Gianna Crawford, Scholarship Recipient (‘26)

Plans for the future of the program are as exciting as the events.

“FSP is off to a great start! We’re planning some great events for the rest of the year, such as a snorkeling trip, scholarship dinner, and even some exciting guest speakers! We can’t wait to see how this program benefits our students’ spiritual lives and experiences at Ave Maria.”  —Monica Weipert, Program Ambassador
