Through loans, grants and other benefits, you can find the options that fit your needs so that you can get the education you deserve. APPLY FOR FAFSA Complete the “Free Application for Federal Student Aid” (FAFSA) on studentaid.gov. See if you qualify for these funds. APPLY/REPORTS FOR EMERGENCY FUNDINGFederalGRANTSGRANTS OVERVIEW Grants are gift aid that do not have to be re-paid. Learn more about these federal grants on the Federal Student Aid website. Recipients must meet the following criteria: Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen. Be admitted to a degree-seeking program or an eligible certificate program. Be enrolled at least half time when loan proceeds are received. Not be in default on a previous student loan or owe a repayment on a previous federal aid award received at any institution Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress. PELL GRANT The Pell Grant is awarded to students with high financial need who are completing a first bachelor’s degree. The amount of the grant is based on the student’s Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and enrollment status. Award amounts can change yearly. Students can receive the Pell Grant for no more than 12 full-time semesters, including summer. Full time enrollment is required to receive the full amount of the grant. The amount will prorate if enrollment is less than full time. To qualify for summer Pell students must be enrolled in at least 6 credits, considered half time. FEDERAL SUPPLEMENTAL OPPORTUNITY GRANT (FSEOG) FSEOG is a federal grant awarded to undergraduate students with exceptional financial need. Pell Grant recipients will receive priority. CHILDREN OF FALLEN HEROES SCHOLARSHIP Pell-eligible student whose parent or guardian died in the line of duty while serving as a public safety officer is eligible, under the Children of Fallen Heroes Scholarship, to receive a maximum award. Student must contact us if he/she has a parent who lost their lives while serving as a public Safety officer. To Apply: Complete the “Free Application for Federal Student Aid” (FAFSA). IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN SERVICE GRANT For the student whose parents or guardian was a member of the U.S. armed forces and died as a result of military service performed in Iraq or Afghanistan after the events of 9/11, and was under 24 years old or enrolled in college at least part-time at the time of the parent’s or guardian’s death. Not eligible for a Federal Pell Grant on the basis of the Expected Family Contribution. Student must contact us if he/she has a parent who lost their lives while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan after the events of 911. StateGRANTSEFFECTIVE ACCESS TO STUDENT EDUCATION GRANT The EASE grant is a no need based grant for students attending a private university full-time in the state of Florida and who can demonstrate that they and their parents/guardians are residents of Florida for at least one full year. Supporting proof of residency for one parent is required for dependent students and supporting proof of residency is required for students for those who are independent. *For terms and conditions of the EASE Grant visit: www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org To Apply: The grant will be awarded automatically to students with a Florida address. Completion of the Florida Resident Financial Aid application and the submission of supporting documents is electronically via the financial aid Net Partner Portal. The EASE grant requires full time enrollment, 12 or more credits. FLORIDA STUDENT ASSISTANT GRANT (FSAG) The FSAG is a need-based grant for Florida residents. Funds are limited. Apply early. FLORIDA BRIGHT FUTURES SCHOLARSHIP The Bright Futures Scholarship program is provided to Florida Academic Scholars award (FAS) and the Florida Medallion Scholars award (FMS) eligible students. To apply and check your award status, use the application below: Florida Financial Aid Application AMU Bright Futures State School Code: 036. If you are a newly enrolled student at AMU, make sure to update your Florida Financial Aid Application with the AMU school code. Your application must have the AMU school code in order for the scholarship funds to be disbursed to you at AMU. Application opens December 1st each year. You should apply your senior year. Contact the Florida Department of Education Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA) for more information at 1-888-827-2004. Eligibility requirements are listed on the Bright Futures Website in Chapter 1: Initial Eligibility, page 3. The initial award is an estimate based on 16 credits of enrollment in fall/spring or 6 credits in summer. Awards are adjusted to your actual enrollment after the add/drop period each semester. In order to renew the scholarship for the following academic year, students must meet all of the renewal requirements at the end of the Spring semester. Renewal requirements are listed on the Bright Futures Website in Chapter 3: Renewal Eligibility. FederalLOANSFEDERAL DIRECT LOANS OVERVIEW These are loans offered by the federal government. The lender is the U.S. Department of Education rather than a bank or credit union. Learn more about federal loans on the Federal Student Aid website. Recipients of federal loans must meet the following criteria: Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen. Be admitted to a degree-seeking program or an eligible certificate program. Be enrolled at least half time when loan proceeds are received. Not be in default on a previous student loan or owe a repayment on a previous federal aid award received at any institution. Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress. SUBSIDIZED LOAN The subsidized loans are awarded to only undergraduate students demonstrating a financial need as determined by the federal processor as a result of your FAFSA. Your loan eligibility is also based on your academic level (see chart). Interest on this loan is subsidized (you are not charged interest) by the federal government while you are in school or during authorized periods of deferments. You begin repayment six months after you graduate or stop attending at least half-time. To Apply:Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Our school code is 039413. UNSUBSIDIZED LOAN A student does not have to demonstrate financial need to receive this loan. You may borrow the cost of attendance minus all financial aid awarded and based on your academic level (see chart). Interest on this loan is not subsidized by the government. You can choose to pay the interest while you are enrolled, or it will accrue and be added to the principal of the loan that you owe. You begin repayment six months after you graduate or stop attending at least half-time. To Apply: Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Our school code is 039413. PARENT PLUS LOAN Parents of dependent students may borrow additional funds through the Federal Direct PLUS Loan program. The borrower must be a natural parent, adoptive parent or stepparent of the dependent student. Parents may borrow any amount up to the cost of education minus any other financial aid their son or daughter may receive. Eligibility will be based upon a satisfactory credit check. Loans are not automatically renewed. Parents must reapply annually. The financial aid department receives notification of the application results from the U.S. department of Education. If approved, the loan will be added to the financial aid package. To Apply: In addition to the FAFSA application completed by the student, the parent must log in to studentaid.gov with their FSA ID and complete the application for the parent PLUS loan. REQUIREMENTS OF THE FEDERAL LOANS The following are two requirements of the Department of Education that must be completed before the first disbursement of these federal loan. Master Promissory Note-The Master Promissory Note (MPN) is a legal document in which you promise to repay your loan(s) and any accrued interest and fees to the U.S. Department of Education. It also explains the terms and conditions of your loan(s). Entrance Counseling- Is a tool to help students understand what it means to take out federal student loans. Instructions on how to complete these and other requirements is included on the student’s financial aid offer letter or found in the financial aid Net Partner portal. GRADUATE PLUS LOAN Graduate students are eligible to borrow under the PLUS loan program up to their cost of attendance minus other estimated financial assistance. Eligibility will be based upon a satisfactory credit check. Loans are not automatically renewed. Students must reapply annually. The financial aid department receives notification of the application results from the U.S. department of Education. If approved the loan will be added to the financial aid package. PrivateLOANSFASTCHOICE Private or Alternative loans are non-federal educational loans available from a variety of national lending institutions and generally require the signature of a credit worthy co-signer. Minimums and maximums vary from these loan programs depending on the lender you choose. To assist you in your search for a lender that is right for you use the FASTChoice tool.
