(includes background to Ulster Historical Foundation, advice before beginning your research, the destruction of records in 1922, the importance of place and administrative divisions in Ireland).
The programme starts with a broad overview of Scots-Irish and Irish research. Benefiting beginners and seasoned genealogists alike, it is practical, wide ranging, factual and informative. Using attractive visual aids, it will explore issues such as land divisions, the major collections of records and how to access them. This primer will set the programme up for the day with the sessions coming afterwards looking at some these important sources in greater detail

(includes an illustrated overview of the major Irish sources, highlighting how such collections can be accessed in Ireland and North America).

10:45-11:35 AM Understanding Irish Townlands: the importance of place, identity and administrative divisions in Irish research
11:40-12:30 PM Records Relating to the Different Churches in Ireland
This session explains in some detail the church records available for the main Christian denominations in Ireland: Church of Ireland (Anglican), Presbyterian and Roman Catholic, as well providing an understanding of the differences between the different Protestant denominations. It will also look at the value of annotations found in Catholic Church records which can be of great benefit the family historian.

1:30-2:20 PM Learning History from Headstones: Irish Gravestone inscriptions
For many families the only record of an individual’s existence may be a headstone. Ireland has a superb collection of gravestones many with detailed inscriptions and frequently from an early period. Using UHF’s own History from Headstones website as a basic tool, this presentation will attempt to demonstrate the usefulness of gravestone inscriptions to research and how the headstones of the Irish around the world can be linked. This will also look at the different ways in which the Scottish settlers in Ulster commemorated their dead and explores the significance of gravestone inscriptions and how they contribute to family history research.

2:35-3:20 PM Using the collection of the landed estates in Ireland, and land valuation records including Griffith valuation and tithe applotment
This session covers the major land collections including, Griffith Valuation, tithe applotment books and tithe defaulters lists, the published Ordnances Survey Memoirs and OS maps.
3:20-4:00 PM Solving your ‘brick-walls’- practical internet tutorial and resolving research queries
Where there is internet hook-up available an extended question and answer session in the form of an in-depth tutorial is possible. The speakers use online resources and their local knowledge to offer participants practical tips about Irish and Scots-Irish research. These sessions will help the beginner and the seasoned genealogist alike, and have proven very popular during recent tours.
4:00-4:30 PM Question and Answer Session hosted by both Dr Brian Trainor and Fintan Mullan
Speakers allow time for Questions & Answers during the course of the session, and at the end of the day.
