Modesty and fashion show hand-in-hand
April 12, 2006
Ave Maria University students, faculty and staff, together with teenagers from several area high schools, parish youth groups and confirmation classes attended a unique event organized by the AMU Chastity Team, April 8. "Image," an evening of music, videos, skits, dance and a full-runway fashion show, was organized by members of the student group to encourage modesty, personal purity and a healthy, positive self-image, particularly among high-school- and college-age students.
The fashion show segments featured AMU students modeling stylish yet modest casual, business and formal wear, giving attendees a visual demonstration of the program's message that modest clothing doesn't have to be unflattering or outdated.
The evening emphasized the importance of clothing as a means of self-expression and a way of communicating the individual's status as one made in the image of God. It also sought to combat a contemporary culture where promiscuity, pornography and other forms of exploitation run rampant, according to student organizers.
"While clothing may not tell the whole story about a person, it can be an important way of telling the world that you are a child of God," said Rene Delgado, a senior who acted as one of the evening's emcees.
