AMU students help the poor in Honduras
June 2, 2006
Just days after the end of the Spring 2006 semester, nine students from Ave Maria University embarked on a two-week mission trip to Honduras, May 9-24.
With the help of Dan Lyons, a residence director at AMU, and Carmina Villa, director of Ave Maria Missions, the students were able to work within two different communities in the small Central American country. During the trip they helped build a church as well as houses for poor families, and they also assisted in elementary school classrooms.
According to Lyons, the students also got the opportunity to get to know some of the children and families in the areas in which they were working, and even helped paint a basketball court where the kids could play.
"The most important part of the trip was the opportunity to share in the everyday joy of the Honduran people and to be able to live and pray alongside them," Lyons said. "It was a blessing that had a profound effect on all who participated."
