'A glimpse of victory...’
July 22, 2006

Joseph Pearce and I were amazed. Before us were 42 high school juniors and seniors from 17 states-including one from Point Barrow, Alaska!-who came to Florida in the summer. They had all read Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and C.S. Lewis' Miracles. We expected that because those texts were the subject of our classes. But most had read the Silmarilion, other works by Lewis, and had heard of and read the great G.K. Chesterton. It was one of the most enjoyable weeks Joseph and I have spent.

These young people give great encouragement to us, what Tolkien would call "a glimpse of victory in the Long Defeat". We're hoping that some of them at least will return to Ave Maria to continue the rich conversation that is Catholic liberal education.

- Fr. Joseph Fessio, S.J.
