Back to School 2006

Ave Maria University began its fourth academic year this week, welcoming approximately 400 new and returning students to its interim campus in Naples.

The more than 125 new freshmen and transfer students represent some of the most academically accomplished undergraduates in the school's short history, according to Assistant Director of Admissions Erin Flaherty.

"This year's incoming class is very strong academically," Flaherty said. "We can expect to see great things from them inside and outside the classroom."

The new students have an average SAT score of 1214 (1818 including the writing section introduced to the SAT last year)-more than 180 points higher than the national average among college-bound seniors reported by the College Board in 2005. Incoming students also have an average high school GPA of 3.6.

But this year's new students are impressive for more reasons than their academic achievements, according to AMU Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Dan Dentino.

"These students are strong in the classroom, but they also show enthusiasm for and dedication to a variety of different activities and interests," Dentino said. "Most important, though, they are excited about and committed to the spiritual life; their different backgrounds and interests are really representative of the universality of the Church."

Including this year's new students, the AMU student body now consists of students from 43 different states, with Florida, California, Illinois and New York among the best represented. Nineteen international students from eight countries will also attend AMU this year, including students from Canada, Mexico, Honduras, Zimbabwe, the Philippines and Eastern Europe.

Kristine Strever is a new student from Somonauk, Ill. A sophomore, she says she transferred to AMU to grow in knowledge of God, and looks forward to the unique course offerings at the university, particularly those in theology.

"The whole reason we're here on this earth is to love and know God," Strever said. "The main reason I came to Ave Maria was to get a better religious education and to grow closer to God."
