Anthony M. Joseph, Ph.D. to speak at Academic Convocation
September 7, 2006
Every semester the Ave Maria University community gathers for a formal academic convocation featuring a guest lecturer. All students and faculty members as well as university staff are encouraged to attend the event, and it is considered the formal beginning of that semester.
This semester's convocation will be held September 13, and Dr. Anthony M. Joseph, an associate professor of history at Eastern University in St. Davids, Pa., will be the guest lecturer. Joseph, who received master's and doctoral degrees in history from Princeton University, will be presenting "Our Nineteenth-Century Wounds: Abortion and the American Past."
Joseph's lecture will focus on social, legal and intellectual changes that came about during the 19th century that essentially paved the way for the legalization of abortion in the United States in the 20th century. He will also argue that the development of a strong Catholic culture may be the key to healing the wounds inflicted on our nation by legalized abortion.
In addition to teaching courses on American history, Joseph is the author of the forthcoming book From Liberty to Liberality: The Transformation of the Pennsylvania Legislature, 1776-1820. His has edited the legal papers of James Iredell, an early U.S. Supreme Court justice, and his primary area of research is American 19th century abortion law.
