"Theology of the Body" translator at AMU
October 8, 2006
An important discovery in the personal papers of Pope John Paul II will be at the heart of a lecture presented at Ave Maria University Oct. 12.
Dr. Michael M. Waldstein, translator of a new edition of the late pontiff's "Theology of the Body," will be at AMU to discuss the theological implications of discoveries he made while examining the original Polish drafts of what would come to be considered John Paul's seminal work.
The original edition of "The Theology of the Body" was published by Pauline Books and Media in 1997. Assembled from translations of more than 100 catechetical addresses given by the pope from 1979 to 1984, this first edition was frequently critiqued for containing many inconsistencies and for lacking clear organization. Waldstein, the founding president of the International Theological Institute in Gaming, Austria, believed that these problems with the English translation could be rectified by consulting the pope's original drafts and outline. Waldstein's research in the John Paul II archives yielded not only explanations of the overall structure of the theology of the body reflections, but also the original Polish text written before John Paul's election to the papacy. This text helped Waldstein resolve translation questions in his new edition of the work, and also provided clarifying headings and subtitles. Waldstein's translation is published under the pope's own title, "Man and Woman He Created Them: A Theology of the Body."
Waldstein's presentation at AMU will focus on the meaning of the late pope's important on human sexuality, exploring the theological implications of his new English translation. His lecture will take place Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. in Stella Maris.
