AMU In Austria
December 7, 2006

There are some opportunities given to university students that are life changing, and studying in another country for a semester is one of those opportunities.

Ave Maria University currently offers two opportunities for students to study in different parts of the world: Ave Maria College of the Americas in San Marcos, Nicaragua, and a program in Gaming, Austria.

The program in Austria is held in the picturesque countryside only a few hours from Vienna. The program is connected with the International Theological Institute for Studies on Marriage and the Family, and is currently housed with the Franciscan University of Steubenville's abroad program in a renovated Carthusian Monastery, the Kartause Maria Thron. The monastery also houses the Language and Catechetical Institute, an English-language Catholic formation program for students from Eastern and Central Europe.

The cost of the program is the same as regular tuition at AMU, but students are responsible for airfare and travel expenses.

Vince DeMeo, a graduate of the ITI who previously worked as director of student life at the Gaming campus, is currently the program director in Austria.

"One concrete goal specific for AMU's Austrian program is to educate students in the ways of Christian virtue, which takes place first in our encounter with the great intellectual masters of Western civilization through their writings and teachings," DeMeo said. "Secondly, we promote maturity in virtue through a life of prayer, dialogue and travel and an experience of culture."

AMU students attend classes with the students at the ITI, who come from all over the world, including the United Kingdom, Romania, Slovenia and the Czech Republic. Classes in theology, philosophy, literature, classics, German and history are offered.
