Dr. Burke comes to Ave Maria University from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he worked as an associate research scientist in the department of Agricultural and Applied Economics. He received his Ph.D. from that department in May of 2005 with a minor in optimization theory and algorithms from the Computer Science department. His dissertation was on induced product innovation and milk protein concentrate in the U.S. dairy industry. This work involved the creation of a detailed model of the dairy industry, and some of this work has been published in the Journal of Dairy Science. In addition to dairy policy issues, Dr. Burke has done research on non-point source phosphorus loading from agricultural activity in Wisconsin’s watersheds. He teaches microeconomic theory, econometrics, industrial organization, and Catholic social teaching, all of which are research interests. One of his brothers, Danny Burke, is a member of the band Glorious Monster.
