Bishop Rizzoto Speaks at Houston Founders Dinner
August 26, 2008

In the same year AMU dedicated our new Oratory on campus, the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston opened the doors of its new Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral, its mother church, in downtown Houston.   And so, on August 26th, 59 Houston Founders and guests were treated to a very special evening, with their guest speaker and Auxiliary Bishop, the Most Reverend Vincent M. Rizzotto.  In his presentation entitled: "The Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart  -- The Soul of the City,"  he not only outlined the challenges of coordinating and completing a project of this magnitude, he also pointed out the enormous fruits and benefits of having a new cathedral at a central location, the symbol of the bishop's teaching authority.

The Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston

Dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, it symbolizes the invitation to experience Christ's love through the mystery of His death and resurrection.  He pointed out things to look for: the massive blood red marble altar, the relics, the statuary, the symbolism behind the stain glass windows.  As he explained, the ascending height of the structure was designed to be a powerful image of transcendence - a reminder for us to fix our gaze on heaven, where our spirits can rise above their earthly existence and be nourished in the hope of God's love for humanity and, too, the city of Houston.   A spirited discussion followed.  It was truly and evening to remember!
