HHS Mandate - Defending Religious Liberty

Ave Maria University stands faithful to Catholic teaching in refusing to comply and choosing to fight the HHS Mandate. Led by AMU President Jim Towey, it dropped the university's student health insurance and sued the federal government in court. The Becket Fund represents Ave Maria University under the lawsuit Ave Maria University v. Sebelius. The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty provides a central resource on the HHS Mandate.

HHS Mandate Timeline 

August 29, 2013  Ave Maria University proceeds to sue the Federal Government for a second time. "The federal government clearly is expecting us to be complicit, to cooperate, to facilitate this, and we think it’s wrong,” said AMU President Jim Towey.

April 1, 2013 The Federal Court’s dismissed Ave Maria's lawsuit on Good Friday, based on technical legal grounds - so-called “ripeness” – because the federal regulations in question are not in final form. Read More
