Students in the summer research program, along with recent Biology graduate Claire Herrick take time off lab work to get out in the field to do some shark tagging with Pat O'Donnell of Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. The Rookery Bay reserve has been studying the effects of the restoration of estuaries on shark populations. For the last two years, AMU students have enjoyed participating in these tagging efforts. Shown below with a lemon shark (center) are (L-R) Claire Herrick (Biology, '07), Allison Prokop, Anthony Jay, and Mary Selkey. For more information on Rookery Bay, follow this link.

The summer session continues as the University prepares to move to the new campus this month. Upon arriving at the new campus, we will realize a tremendous upgrade in our lab and teaching facilities. If you are considering AMU as your college choice to study biology, we strongly encourage you to visit the AMU campus and allow us to give you a tour of our new state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, allow us to discuss our departmental teaching philosophy, and discuss research opportunities available to AMU biology majors.

May 2007
Biology majors Anthony Jay, Allison Prokop and Mary Selkey have received AMU summer research grants to pursue research alongside Biology and Chemistry faculty members. On-going research projects include the study of marine microbial ecology (Quintero), lipid metabolism (Castagnet), inhibitors of HIV enzyme targets (Peliska), and membrane-bound transport proteins in yeast (Cronin). As many as six students will be engaged in research projects this summer. The students will present their research progress in a poster session at the beginning of the Fall 2007 semester.
